What Happens in Couples Counselling? Understanding Couples Therapy with Roz in Ross-on-Wye

what happens in couples counselling

Starting couples counselling can feel daunting, especially if things have felt difficult for a while or communication has broken down. Many couples are unsure what happens in couples counselling, how couples counselling works, or whether relationship counselling in Ross-on-Wye will feel right for them.

Couples counselling offers a supportive and structured space to better understand what is happening within the relationship, improve communication, and begin exploring the patterns that may be keeping you stuck. At Roz’s Counselling Corner in Ross-on-Wye, I work with couples at a pace that feels manageable for both people involved.

Beginning With Individual Sessions

Before starting joint couples sessions, I usually meet with each person individually first.

These individual sessions allow both people the opportunity to speak openly about their experiences, concerns, and hopes for therapy. It also helps me begin to understand the relationship dynamics from both perspectives, rather than only what may appear on the surface during conflict or difficult conversations.

These sessions are not about deciding who is right or wrong, and couples counselling is never about taking sides. Instead, the aim is to build a fuller understanding of the relationship, the communication patterns within it, and what each person may be carrying emotionally into the relationship.

Individual sessions can also help people feel more comfortable before beginning joint work together.

Moving Into Joint Couples Sessions

Once the individual sessions have taken place, we then begin meeting together as a couple.

Joint sessions provide space to explore difficulties within the relationship in a calmer and more supported way. This may include:

  • communication difficulties
  • recurring arguments or conflict
  • emotional distance or disconnection
  • trust issues
  • stress from parenting, work, or life pressures
  • feeling unheard or misunderstood
  • changes within the relationship
  • rebuilding connection after difficult experiences

Couples counselling can also offer couples communication support, helping both people slow conversations down and better understand the patterns underneath conflict or disconnection.

Part of the process involves slowing conversations down enough to understand what may be happening underneath reactions, frustration, withdrawal, or conflict. Often, couples find themselves repeating the same patterns without fully understanding why.

A Space Where Both People Are Heard

One of the concerns many people have before starting couples counselling is whether the therapist will “take sides.”

My role is not to decide who is right or wrong. Instead, I aim to create a balanced and supportive environment where both people feel heard and understood.

Relationships are complex, and often both people are carrying stress, hurt, frustration, fear, or unmet emotional needs in different ways. Couples counselling can help bring greater awareness to these patterns and create opportunities for healthier communication and understanding.

Working at Your Pace

Every relationship is different, so couples counselling is tailored to the needs of the people involved.

Some couples come to therapy wanting support with communication and reconnecting emotionally. Others may be navigating significant relationship difficulties, major life changes, or trying to decide what they want moving forward.

Therapy is not about forcing outcomes or placing pressure on either person. Instead, it offers space to explore things honestly, safely, and with support.

Some couples also find it helpful to read additional relationship support resources outside of sessions, such as those available through Relate.
